Indian lady claimed to be a student at UC Berkeley and was calling to update the school's directory. I did go to Berkeley but it felt suspicious. She asked if I lived at a certain address (which I never have) and if my email address was correct (which it wasn't). I think they're targeting people by looking at their LinkedIn profile and then Googling their contact info. Seems like a scam to get fundraising money.
I screen called the number because I didn't recognize it. Like the others, the caller said something about UC Berkeley alumni list but I didn't recognize the number or recall agreeing to be contacted. So I declined the screen call and reported spam.
Female caller very shady and hushed voice when saying from where and from whom she is calling from. Started asking a ton of questions saying she is updating alumni list for UC Berkeley. When she asked where I work or what I do, I asked her what is the reason for collecting this information. Some of the stuff she was saying didn't make sense or add up. She said she was calling to reconnect alumni to current students who are struggling, and impacted by COVID and so on. If so, why do you need to know where I work or what I do? I challenged her on this so she skipped this question and kept on going. That's when I started to get suspicious and went to do a quick Google search of this number. At another point, she asked for pledges and kept talking on and on...without regard to whether it was a convenient time for me or not. If no info can be sent for me to verify regarding the organization you're calling from, that's already a red flag for me. So, no thank you. Have a fantastic day, and bye.
